Both Restylane and Juvederm are dermal fillers designed to treat the signs of aging – specifically around the lips. The hyaluronic acid contained within the filler provides a “plump†effect that helps to add volume to your lips and reduce the wrinkles commonly associated with aging. Both fillers have the same basic ingredients. However, there are key differences between the two – namely the use, cost, and side effects. Choosing one or the other is often best left to a professional.

Comparing Restylane and Juvederm

Restylane and Juvederm are common types of nonsurgical, noninvasive procedures designed to safely and easily reduce the signs of aging. While we mentioned that both contain hyaluronic acid – a common ingredient in dermal fillers – both also contain lidocaine to help alleviate any pain during the injection process. Furthermore, both are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They are completely safe!

Restylane for Lips

According to Restylane, they were first dermal lip filler to be approved by the FDA. That’s quite an achievement. Their features include, “silkier, smoother, natural-looking lips.†In the office, we have used Restylane for lip augmentation and to smooth any aging lines around the lips.

Here are some key aspects to note about Restylane:

  • Restylane is FDA approved and completely safe for qualifying candidates.
  • There is little to no downtime following treatment.
  • The injection is designed to last up to 12 months under the right conditions.
  • There is minor discomfort during the injection, but concerns or worries can be addressed quickly.

Juvederm for Lips

Juvederm, while similar to Restylane, is its own product through and through. It comes in two forms designed specifically for the lips, including Juvederm Ultra XC for lip augmentation and Juvederm Volbella XC for vertical lip lines and added volume. Depending on the appearance you seek, a professional will recommend one or the other.

It’s common for patients undergoing Juvederm to experience slight discomfort during the injection, along with bruising or swelling for two to three days afterward. These side effects typically go away within one week.

When comparing the results of the two, both are known to produce fantastic results – lasting anywhere from 10 to 12 months, on average.

Overall, both Restylane and Juvederm take just minutes to complete. You will, of course, likely require follow-up procedures to maintain their effect on your lips. Your beauty professional will go over everything with you in advance of the treatment.
